Surface Water & Groundwater

Surface Water is found in rivers, streams, lakes, ponds and other natural watercourses. The Water Framework Directive (WFD) is the primary Directive that sets out water quality objectives and metrics for measuring the quality of freshwater in Europe.

Surface water resources in Ireland are under extreme pressure due to human activities and climate change. Despite actions introduced to improve surface water quality in recent years, the EPA have documented that nearly half of the surface water bodies in Ireland are failing to meet EU WFD objectives. The number of pristine rivers in the country is down from over 500 in the 1980s to just 20.

Aeon Environmental can carry out biological and chemical surface water monitoring and assessments, with clear reporting against any consenting limits. Our monitoring programmes and assessments can be tailored to suit a range of requirements, including:

  • Baseline surface water quality evaluation for environmental impact assessments
  • Biological Water Quality Assessments (Biotic Index/ Q-Value)
  • Discharge & effluent sampling, with analysis undertaken in accredited labs
Groundwater monitoring is required to protect drinking water supplies, investigate impacts of point source pollution, monitor abstraction and to investigate the links between groundwater and the ecological health of associated receptors. We can carry out groundwater quality monitoring as well as level & flow monitoring. Our groundwater quality analysis is undertaken in accredited labs and can include standard determinands such as pH, Conductivity, Oxygen Content, Nitrate etc., as well as any required additional determinands, including E. coli, Total & Faecal Coliforms and Pesticides etc.
